We started in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana (Loo-blee-ah-nah). A former Roman settlement that was also part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, this small, pretty city quickly became one of our favorite places in Europe to have visited. <\/p>\n<p>We stayed in the old town area along the busy riverbanks. Just outside our hotel doors we had access to dozens of outdoor restaurants and a lively cafe and bar scene that rivals nearly anywhere else we&#8217;ve been. We also ate <em>a lot<\/em> of good ice cream.
