One of our last outings in Australia was to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary just south of Brisbane. The city bus ran right by our apartment and into the sanctuary parking lot. More of a private zoo than a rescue facility (the sanctuary does not take in injured koalas), we got to see a number of different mammals, birds, and lizards native to the continent of Australia. It was cuteness overload, and we were smitten.
We got a family picture holding a koala at Lone Pine. We used it as our Christmas card that year. We heard from a friend that his dad saw the picture and exclaimed, “They have a koala?!”
Nice. I’m disappointed that the picture wasn’t on the wall of fame there. It would’ve been nice to see “The Delaney Family” right next to Nine Inch Nails.
