Macau

Just across the Pearl River delta from Hong Kong is the former Portuguese colony of Macau. Now the most profitable gambling destination in the world, the tiny region takes in seven times as much money as Las Vegas each year.

Ferries run the hour-long trip between the two cities 24 hours a day. We had to take our passports with us to clear customs, but otherwise the journey was comfortable and brief.

Much of the old Portuguese architecture is still intact and it gives Macau a certain charm that is lacking in most other Asian cities. We only spent about eight hours there, but we enjoyed our short visit immensely.
